Ummah Edinburgh
Ummah Edinburgh is a community organisation which aims to activate Muslims in Edinburgh in all fields of civic society. We aim to provide a platform for members of Edinburgh’s Muslim community to debate, discuss and act upon issues that affect us as Scottish Muslims.
We raise funds for charitable organisations, campaign for Muslim political and social rights and actively promote Muslim participation in Scottish life. We promote Islam as a way of life which is compatible with Scottish life and aim to create a better understanding of Islam amongst non-Muslim communities; and we Endeavour to promote good relations with all communities.
Radio Ramadan Edinburgh
Radio Ramadan stations have been running for many years on a Restricted Service Licence (RSL) during the holy month of Ramadan. There are now over 30 stations across the country, from Bristol in the south to Dundee in the north. Some stations have evolved into permanent stations, serving the local Muslim community.
Radio Ramadan Edinburgh (RRE) first aired in October-November 2004 on a RSL. InshAllah, this year we are on air 24 hours-a-day from 24th September 2006, broadcasting on 87.7 FM in Edinburgh and the surrounding areas. The station is run completely by volunteers and is funded through advertisement through local businesses and national bodies, such as the Islamic Society of Britain (ISB).
The purpose of the station is to provide the Muslim community of Edinburgh – and surrounding areas – focussed programmes during the holy month of Ramadan. The programmes are suited for a wide range of audiences and are both informative and entertaining. Most are live broadcasts and enable listeners to phone-in and put forward their views.
At a time when there is so much negativity being portrayed about the religion of Islam, we hope that this can counter it by spreading the true message of the religion.
